Well I finally got a chance to compare my Duoplay Beaulieu 708EL with souper8's Stereo Beaulieu 708EL. I have to say that except for the stereo function and the ability to have two or three blades, they are pretty much identical.
Do most people use the projector in 2 blade mode? We compared 3 bladed on mine with 2 blades on his and I have to say that although it made the image a little brighter, there was significant flicker. If having a brighter image is so imporant, I'd rather get that HTI lamp modification. How difficult is that to install? I mean I installed the modifcation for the P1008 synchronizer on the Bauer T610 and that wasn't difficult.
I was comparing my Beaulieu 708EL with the Bauer T610 and I was that even though both had three blades shutters and the same excellent lens, and the same new 15v 150w bulb, the Beaulieu made a significantly brighter image. Why is that? I wish someone had an Elmo GS1200 and a Braun Visacustic to bring over so we could to a comparasion between all the big projectors!

Claw exchange in Beaulieu projectors:
Costs at Bavaria Film Munich under EUR 500, including parts. Can only be done in specialized service shops.
2/3-blade shutter: The 2-blade possibility is only for 24 fps and impossible for 18 fps. Even with 24 fps, the flicker is visible in light areas. But this is the standard as used in nearly all 16 mm and 35 mm projectors. With 2 blades, you can do PAL video transfers easyly without any flicker at 25 fps.
Beaulieu-brightness: The projector has a gate which is nearly not cropping, showing the complete camera frame. So the neccessary magnification for the same screen size is less than with projectors which are cropping more. On the other hand, the Beaulieu works with very short pull down phases, providing more time for projecting. Only compare the segment angles of the shutter blades. Beaulieu is comparable with a XL shutter.

HTI-conversion:
It?s no easy thing, for several reasons:
you must be able to do the mechanical job. Installing a fan into the front cover, that is requiring an exact cut in the metal.
Adjusting the lamp, making the electrical connections to the external power box. Applying individual filters to avoid interferences to the sound circuits, installing a safty shutter, to allow the lamp to keep on with stopped projector...
If you can do this all, get the Wittner kit!

I just finished filing my claw down to remove the groove. I run so much better now. I think that should do it for the claw. I also udjusted the lamp position and it looks really bright and sharp. Now I just need to fix the sound problem and the loose bulb connecter. I really like this projector.
